Susan I had this in my archives I am certain that this will put smiles on a lot of faces. In (my) reality, this man did do lots of good in his time and did create lots of families. I know he did lots wrong recently, but I have to wonder if we should be judged by for what we did in a sliver of time. Just got me thinking. www.thejournalnews.com Rockland The Journal News, Thursday, September 21, 2000 I believe there is an article in the Law Journal, Monday, 9/18 Pearl River lawyer disbarred for misconduct Steve Lieberman Susan Fanaticism consists of redoubling your efforts when you have forgotten your aim. — George Santayana Jeanne

Hi Susan, According to your first post, it was 9/21; also at that time you thought it may be in the law journal for 9/18. — Peace freedom & justice Deanna – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Fanaticism consists of redoubling your efforts when you have forgotten your aim. — George Santayana

Stanley actually did me a favor, which made my search alot easier when I decided to find my son. When I was pregnant in 1975, and my mother found Stanley, I was given the choice to go to Flo Crit in GA or to use Stanley. I chose Stanley because he guaranteed that my son would go directly from the hospital to parents and Flo Crit couldn’t do that. My son would have had to go into foster care for several months if I went the Flo Crit route. So we decided on Stanley. When we were initially getting to know each other over the phone, my mother, (who handled most of the business with Stanley) told him that we didn’t want the birthfather involved in any of the process. He told her no problem, we would just leave that part blank, and get no signatures from him. I had my son on Oct 7, 1975. Stanley had promised me numerous times that he would come to Atlanta personally to handle the finalities and give my son to his parents. He didn’t come. He sent a young lawyer down and he handled it. I signed the relinquishment papers in the hospital. One yr later, when I was back in TN, the state of TN showed up at my home, made my mother leave the room and questioned me about giving my son up. They wanted to make sure I was not coerced into doing this. We couldn’t understand how the state even knew about this until a couple of days later when we received a letter from Stanley. The a/parents of my son had tried to finalize the adoption in NY. The judge wouldn’t allow the adoption to finalize until a birthfather signature was obtained. Stanley sent my parents the papers to get a birthfather signature. He called my mother and told her that she was to get a notarized signature, he didn’t care who signed it, as long as she could pull off getting a supposed birthfather signature that was notarized. So a new relinquishment was signed, a birthfather signature was forged and notarized by a member of my family who was a notary. On the new relinquishment papers was the names of my son’s a/parents and the county in NY they were from. Stanley hadn’t bothered to take the names off. Now that could have been an oversight on his part, and I thought for yrs he didn’t mean to leave those names on there, but knowing what I know about him now, I have decided that he simply didn’t care at that point. He just wanted the job done, didn’t care if the signature was real or not, didn’t care if I knew the parents names, he had already gotton the money from them 1 yr earlier, he just wanted the mess straightened up and wanted it done quickly. So that goes to show you that he had no real loyalty for any sides of the issue, not even his own clients. He didn’t protect their identity and to this day I thank him for that. Without Stanley’s help I wouldn’t have been able to find my son and his family, still in the same county in NY 15 minutes after I started to search. I will close my part of the discussion on Stanley with an excert from the book I mentioned in my first post. I think it sums up his attitude quite nicely. "Michelman probably didn’t do it strictly for the money. He liked the idea that he was helping desperate women and getting people babies, liked their gratitude, reveled in it, in fact, liked the power of it all, liked being as one couple put it, "Mr. Stork." Several months after the indictment, Marge Rivkin, an old client of his, had called Michelman. She was calling because she and her husband were looking to adopt again, and she thought he might be able to offer a few leads. "Sure," Michelman said. "Why don’t you come on in, and we’ll talk about it. Marge was glad he was able to keep his sense of humor in the midst of what he must be going through. "Oh Stan," she said, chiding him, "you can’t be still handling adoptions now. How could you do it?" "Marge," he replied. "I can do anything." It took yrs for him to learn that he in fact couldn’t do anything. I just hope that what has happened to him now will send a message to all the other attorneys who are following his example, and that this kind of thing doesn’t continue.
