Posted on Mon, Feb. 11, 2002     Father, 4 women held in death of infant By Jessica Brice  Associated Press A Marin County man and the four women he lived with face an arraignment hearing today on charges related to an infant’s death and the mistreatment of their 12 other children. Winifred Wright, 45, Carol Bremner, Mary Campbell, 37, Deirdre Wilson, 37, and Kali Polk-Matthews, 20, were arrested Friday for the November death of a 19-month-old baby. The 12 other children, ranging in age from 8 months to 16 years old, were found malnourished at the Marinwood home. Most of them suffered from rickets, a bone disorder in malnourished children, said Marin County sheriff’s detective Fred Marziano, lead investigator on the case. Wright, Bremner, Campbell and Wilson each face one count of second-degree murder and multiple counts of involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment. Polk-Matthews faces one count of involuntary manslaughter and one count of child endangerment, Marziano said. “We don’t know exactly what their affiliation is together other than they are cohabiting and producing children,” Marziano said. “For Marin County this is not everyday stuff.” Police began investigating the large family in November after four women brought a baby to Kaiser-San Rafael hospital, where he died from “severe malnutrition and neglect,” according to the Marin County Sheriff’s Department. Police later searched the house that the five adults shared and Child Protective Services removed the children and placed them in emergency foster care. The sheriff’s department said the adults didn’t cooperate with investigators, forcing police to conduct DNA tests to determine who the children’s parents are. Those tests confirmed that Wright had fathered all 13 children with Bremner, Campbell and Wilson, Marziano said. Friday’s arrests came as a shock to many in the neighborhood, some of whom said they had no idea 13 children lived in the house. “When they told us how many children were there, I nearly fell out of my shoes,” neighbor Connie Williams told the Marin Independent Journal.
